You could call her the queen of alterations, the go-to-gal for fixing your designer wear or the professional tailor who can help with your wedding dress—she is the person to call. Valerica Moldovan, who goes by Vali, is owner of Vali's Alterations & Cleaners in Rocklin. Open for about 3 years, this has been Vali's dream since she moved to the United States from Romania in 1992. Before coming to the states she had a business in Romania that consisted of custom made bridal clothing. "This is what I went to school for, it is something that I have always wanted to pursue and once I moved to this area I wanted to have my business again," explains Vali. But it would take a few years until Vali was able to have her own shop again. While working at Nordstroms, she dreamed of having her business in a particular strip-mall in Rocklin. "I noticed that there were available spots to lease a space, and I dreamed about how wonderful it would be to have my alterations business there." One current business that was already in the building was a dry-cleaning business and it wasn't long before it was up for sale, which Vali jumped at the chance to buy it. And so became Vali's Alterations & Cleaners. Not only do they offer dry cleaning services, but Vali's custom tailoring as well.
Stepping into her shop, one is immediately greeted by Julia, Vali's employee and close friend. Julia's charming personality makes it easy for customers to engage in conversation. Just a glance across the room sits Vali at her sewing machine and if you have been in before they most definitely know you by name. This is something Vali says is important for her to get to know her customers. It's what she says is one of the benefits of having a small business.
Specializing in mostly high-fashion clothes, Vali says many of her clients are bridal related. During the high wedding season she can work on 3 to 4 wedding dresses a week. From leather, fur and special occasion clothing she enjoys the challenge and fun each new alteration brings. She also designs and makes dresses. Not many people can say they have worked on a Valentino dress or an Oscar de la Renta leather jacket. "I was honored just to have worked on such a famous designer clothing line," Vali humbly says. It is the trust that she has built with her clientele that keeps them coming back and bringing in such cherished clothes. One favorite memory Vali has is working on a wedding gown for a daughter that was to wear her mother's dress she wore on her wedding day, 29 years before.
When asked what Vali enjoys most about her business, she doesn't hesitate at all to say she loves helping out her community and building relationships with her customers. "It is what makes me the most happy," she exclaims.
Vali's Alterations & Cleaners is located at 5060 Rocklin Rd. #B. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 8am until 7pm, and Friday from 8am until 4pm. For more information please visit www.ValisAlterations.com
