SACRAMENTO, Calif., July 6 (Our California Times) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom accused President Donald Trump of directing a Justice Department investigation into him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, even as multiple reports said federal inquiries tied to Newsom’s circle began before Trump returned to office.

In a Monday post on X and a video statement, Newsom called the inquiry a “fishing expedition” and said Trump had put him and his wife on a “hit list.” Newsom said the president was targeting him for political reasons.

A Justice Department source familiar with the matter said at least two criminal investigations involving people connected to Newsom have been active in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California for about a year. The source said the matters grew out of whistleblower complaints and local reports in Sacramento.

One of the inquiries involved former Newsom chief of staff Dana Williamson, who pleaded guilty in May in a separate corruption case that did not implicate the governor, according to court records and reporting.

Other accounts said the probes began last year and centered on matters in California, not at Justice Department headquarters in Washington. The exact scope of the investigations has not been made public.
